A single vehicle car crash led to the driver being transported by Mercy One helicopter to Des Moines in rural Hamilton Wednesday.

The driver, Dwight “Hime” Bonnett, was driving westbound on Vermont St. before going off the road just before a bridge and overturning into a creek. Passersby called 911, the Bussey Fire Department arrived first on scene.

Bussey firefighter Shantel Desplanque tells KNIA/KRLS News Bonnett was conscious and talking with first responders, but was wedged in between the steering wheel and windshield. Additional emergency crews arrived on scene, as well as Mercy One helicopter, to help free Bonnett from the vehicle and out of the 10-15 foot ditch.

Bussey Fire, Pella Ambulance, Knoxville Fire and Rescue, Indiana Township Fire, Marion County Emergency Management, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and Lambirth Towing assisted in the rescue. Sheriff Jason Sandholdt tells KNIA/KRLS News multiple different agencies worked well together to respond to the scene quickly and to transport the driver out of the vehicle and safely to Mercy One, and that everyone did a great job.

Bonnett was transported to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines where he is in serious but stable condition.
