A fatal car crash occurred this morning on Highway 92 south of Knoxville, as a silver minivan hit a semi head on.

Knoxville Police Chief Dan Losada tells KNIA/KRLS News at approximately 7am Saturday morning, Knoxville Police received a report of a car driving on the wrong side of the highway. Knoxville Police attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle hit a semi resulting in a the death of 22-year-old Malloree Beth Murphy of Pleasantville, the driver of the minivan.

The 71-year-old driver of the Smith Fertilizer and Grain semi was determined to have no injuries and declined treatment at the scene, despite oil and a chemical spilling from the trailer onto the highway, where emergency services contacted the Department of Natural Resources and cleaned up the spill with no danger to the public.

The Knoxville Police Department, Knoxville Fire Department, Knoxville Township Rural Fire, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Department of Transportation, and Iowa State Patrol all responded to the scene, which resulted in Highway 92 being closed on the westbound lane between exits 60 and 62 for over three hours.

Chief Losada said no determination has yet been made as to why the vehicle was traveling on the wrong side of the road, with the investigation ongoing by the Iowa State Patrol.
