Fireworks sales in the city of Pella will be restricted to industrial zones after an ordinance approved at a special Pella City Council meeting Wednesday.

The third and final reading that passed unanimously includes language limiting sales to industrial areas, with city staff citing the need to move fireworks to areas that would be less likely to have fires spread and for temporary structures to avoid having to adhere to more stringent design standards in commercial zones. The council also updated the definitions of fireworks in city code to better align with the state law passed last year, and included a $250 fine for anyone violating the city’s ban on using fireworks.
