Ordinances relating to the sale and use of fireworks had a second readings approved at a special Pella City Council meeting Monday.

The ordinances, if adopted, will restrict the sales of fireworks to industrial zones in the community, as well as update city code with the updated state definitions of fireworks and establishes fines for those who violate the city’s ban on using them. City staff says there are concerns with allowing the sale in commercial districts, especially with temporary sites not fitting into design standards and the potential safety hazards of having large quantities of fireworks near densely occupied commercial zones.

A special city council meeting will be held on Wednesday at noon to review the third and final reading, and if approved, the ordinance would be adopted before the sale of fireworks opens next month in Iowa.
