The Protect Your Melon bike safety event was yesterday in Pleasantville, with the goal of teaching kids the importance of wearing a helmet.

Kids learned bike safety by riding through traffic cones and being aware of their surroundings, and saw a presentation from Marion County Public Health with a watermelon being dropped with and without a helmet. Police Chief Joe Mrstik tells KNIA/KRLS News it’s a great way to show kids how to be safe on summer vacation through showing them what happens when you don’t wear your helmet, and a great way to make sure kids are following the proper rules while riding a bike. The Protect Your Melon event was just one of several Marion County bike safety events, as Knoxville will host the Helmets and Hot Dogs event on June 4th in the City of Knoxville parking lot from 11:30am to 1pm.
