The first of several Marion County bike safety events begin today, as the “Protect Your Melon” demonstration will take place outside of the Webb-Shadle Memorial Library in Pleasantville.

Helmets to those who need them will be provided while supplies last, helmet checks will be provided, and the Pleasantville Police Department will provide bike safety training. State Representative Greg Heartsill who partnered with the library to put on the event tells KNIA/KRLS News he wants kids to have fun this summer, but most importantly be safe while doing so and need to wear a helmet, learn how to wear a helmet properly, and understand what the potential consequences are of not wearing one and what could happen. The event is geared towards children from preschool to fifth grade. A drawing will take place for summer fun baskets and a new bike. Protect Your Melon runs from 1:15 – 2:30pm.
