The change of venue motion filed by the defense in the Jason Carter murder trial has been granted by Judge Brad McCall.
The motion made by the defense was that the unique circumstances of the case involving the civil trial and extensive coverage from local and Des Moines media would make jury selection impossible. County Attorney Ed Bull disagreed, arguing that media coverage of the event wasn’t sensational, rather, it was normal coverage of a sensational case. Judge McCall ruled that
“In light of the significant, ongoing pretrial publicity related to the charge pending against Jason, it is better to err on the side of caution. Accordingly, Defendant’s motion for change of venue should be granted.”
The court will consult with administrators to identify the location where the venue will be moved to, which has not been decided at this time.
