Pella Christian started the softball playoffs on the right track after defeating Madrid 6-2 in a postseason game heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
The Tigers struck first, however, after a slow start by Eagles hurler Danielle Vande Voort, and gave up two runs in the top of the first.
Vande Voort, who earned the win with a complete game, four strikeout effort, tells KNIA/KRLS Sports it wasn’t the start she wanted, but her defense and catcher Sophie Howerzyl were key in settling her down.
“They came out really strong, and they just hit me really well, but then our defense came back and really shut them down a little bit,” she says.
Pella Christian erased the deficit in the next inning, with cousins Emerson Sarver and Ivy Terpstra each scoring runs back-to-back. Terpstra says the bottom of the order hitters contributing is a big key into if the team will have success moving forward.
“It’s huge that we can contribute and it’s to be to, if they are down on the top of the lineup, then we get to bring them back up and then they can score us,” Terpstra says.
Both defenses slowed the bats in the middle innings, before Pella Christian used well-placed ground balls and bunts to scratch out a four-run top of the sixth, and held on from there. Sierra Pleima was 3/3 with a run and RBI, Chloe Morgan was 3/4 with a run, and Terpstra was 2/3 with a 2B, a run, and RBI.
Pella Christian is back in action on the road tonight in Van Meter. Join us for pregame coverage at 6:45 p.m. and opening pitch at 7:00 on 92.1 KRLS.
