Today we begin the countdown of the Top 10 sports stories for the 2017-2018 school year at Pella High with number ten.

When the Pella girls soccer team made their 12th trip to the state soccer tournament, they did so knowing goals would come at a premium if they were going to advance against the best 4A teams in Iowa.

So the first score may have been a bit more shocking than most when they took on Cedar Rapids Xavier, as a corner kick traveled from the foot of Josie Lickteig into the net, a rarity at the high school level. Senior Erica Bossard said after the game that corner goal and another that came from her later in the game were both key in the team’s success in the quarterfinal, and the result of disciplined work.

“We practice corners almost every practice, so just that was awesome and letting Josie have that was a terrific feeling,” she said.

Pella finished in the top four of the state tournament after defeating Xavier 2-nil, before falling in the semifinals to Waverly-Shell Rock.
