The Knights of Columbus in Pella kick off their 20th annual Campaign for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities at grocery stores in the Tulip City this Saturday.
Joe Lickteig with the Knights of Columbus tells KNIA/KRLS News 2017 was a record-breaking year for the drive, raising over $20,000 for special education departments at Pella and Pella Christian, Christian Opportunity Center, and the Iowa Special Olympics.
Lickteig says they are also bringing back the team challenge, with high school athletes from both Pella and Pella Christian helping raise money for classmates in their respective schools’ special education classrooms. as well as a telephone drive to ask for donations from local businesses.
“This is the fourth year of the team challenge so we’ll have probably three or four teams from each school, and they’re going to cover most of the first day, and make a huge impact,” he says. “They get a chance to understand what the program’s about, but they also get a chance to figure out who their peers are with disabilities at the schools, and that’s a great benefit.”
The 20th annual Knights of Columbus Campaign for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities begins Saturday and continues through August 25th at the Pella Hy-Vee, Fareway, and Walmart entrances.
