Knoxville Fire Chief Jim Mitchell has resigned his position and taken up the same post in Polk City.
The Polk City City Council approved the hiring in a unanimous vote in their meeting Monday evening. Chief Mitchell tells KNIA/KRLS News the decision to leave was tough.
“I definitely have mixed emotions. I’m torn and my heart is heavy. I’m not crazy about leaving the Knoxville Community, but this is a great opportunity in Polk City. It’s been an honor serving Knoxville, and I feel like i’m leaving it a little better than I found it, and I would ask that the community continues to support the department. Whether fire or emergency medical services, they only have the best intent, and they are dedicated and passionate about serving, but they need the community’s support, so I am asking for that continued support.”
Knoxville City Manager Aaron Adams tells KNIA/KRLS News Mitchell won’t be easy to replace.
“The community is certainly going to miss Chief Mitchell. He’s been a dedicated servant to the community, and with this being his hometown he serves it with all of his heart, so he is going to be missed. There will be big shoes to fill in the coming months.”
Mitchell was sworn in as the Knoxville Fire Chief in 2013, after being hired from Urbandale. Mitchell will officially take over in Polk City on August 27th.
