A culture of success in football has also built external expectations to a sky-high level at Pella High School.
Head Coach Jay McKinstrey tells KNIA/KRLS Sports it’s never been easy for the team to collect the records they have over the last four years, and it’s unfair to expect in August they will do it all again.
“If you live in expectancy in to what maybe could happen and just enjoying the time you watch them or be part of that, and I want our kids to play in that too,” he says. “Because you can put to far high of expectations on yourself also and expect everything to go perfectly well and everything’s going to be great, and all that.”
“But let me tell you, we’re going to face some adversity this season–it’s going to happen. It happens to every football team and it’s happened every year, even though we won the state championship those three years and last year when we finished second — we faced many times of adversity.”
McKinstrey says while the ultimate goal every season is a state championship, in order to have that success, they have to focus on what is immediately in front of them — and right now, it’s week one.
Pella opens on the road with DCG on Friday.
