The Pella Youth Coalition is highlighting numerous upcoming meetings and education opportunities for the community as it relates to preventing drug use among teenagers.
John Amelse with the coalition tells KNIA/KRLS News they are in an ongoing process to make the entire community aware of a growing drug and alcohol problem among youth. Amelse says those who want to learn more can attend a variety of events coming up this fall, including:
Derek Jordan: The Light was Green When I Last Looked. – Thursday, September 6th at 7:30 p.m. in Douwstra Auditorium – Derek Jordan was a college swimmer when he caused a fatal car crash while under the influence of alcohol. He shares his story in hopes to help others make better decisions before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle.
Drug and Alcohol Abuse Recognition Training – Thursday, September 20th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Pella Corporation – Former or current law enforcement officers, who are internationally certified Drug Recognition Experts, will share information about how to identify signs and symptoms of each drug category.
Pella Wellness Consortium Community Common Reading Experience – Wednesday, October 3rd at Central College – Joan Becker, author of the book “Sentenced to Life: Mental Illness, Tragedy, and Transformation,” is the mother of the man who killed legendary Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas, and she will share the impact drugs and mental illness had on her son, and how the incident fueled her to become an advocate to promote change in the mental illness system
“What You Don’t’ See” Trailer – Friday, October 5th and 12th before Pella and Pella Christian home football games – Parents are invited to a mobile training trailer that simulates a typical teenager’s bedroom, and teaches parents the meanings of signs, symbols & clothing, common hiding spots and other precursors that can be a tip to otherwise unsuspecting parents (adults only invited)
Amelse says the key to helping youth is to have the entire community fight the growth of drug use.
