Here’s what happened Saturday for Central College athletics teams…
– Central College scored five touchdowns but it was a pair of late second-quarter defensive stands that were the game-turners in a 35-14 Dutch football win at the University of Dubuque Saturday, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS. Central remained perfect at 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the American Rivers Conference.
– After falling behind early in the first period, the Central College women’s soccer team scored three times to secure a 3-1 victory against Simpson College Saturday afternoon. Central (5-2-1, 1-0-0 conference) beat the Storm (2-6-0, 0-1-0 conference) won a match that served as the American Rivers Conference opener for both teams.
– A pair of victories for the Central College volleyball team at the North Park University Invitational Saturday pushed the team’s overall record to an even 8-8. Against Greenville College, Central won 25-20, 25-27, 25-23, 25-8. In the nightcap, Central beat St. Mary’s College 17-25, 25-13, 25-23, 26-24.
– For the second time in three years, a duo of Central College men’s tennis players won the Flight B Doubles of the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships as sophomores David Boschma and Ethan St. John won the title Saturday. Boschma and St. John will play together next weekend at the USTA/ITA Division III Midwest Regional in St. Peter, Minnesota.
– In consolation action at the USTA/ITA Division III Midwest Regional, the doubles pairing of Karleigh Schilling and Jenna Stewart earned their second win of the weekend Saturday. Coming off of a win in their second match on Friday, Schilling and Stewart knocked off Emma Sievers/Elizabeth Johnson from Concordia University (Wis.) 8-3 in the opening match of the day.
– A poor first half was too much for the Central College men’s soccer team to overcome as the Dutch were defeated 3-2 by Simpson College on Saturday afternoon.
