The excitement begins in earnest at Knoxville High School this Homecoming week; but while students compete in a variety of spirit events for fun and competition points, one event will be used to give back to the community.
Throughout the week, each class is collecting canned and non-perishable food; points will be awarded based on contributions, and the proceeds will be turned over to the Helping Hands food pantry.
Student Molly Devon tells KNIA/KRLS News there’s a push to provide more than just canned goods; a variety of food is being collected, to give recipients a healthier diet.
“Peanut butter is worth multiple points; I know meat is worth multiple points and like a lot of the protein stuff is worth a lot more, to encourage people to bring those in even though they are more expensive,” Devon says.
The classes have previously combined to provide thousands of pounds of food each year for Helping Hands, boosting their respective point totals while giving Helping Hands supplies it needs.
