Despite early success from the power option ground-and-pound of Carlisle, No. 3 Pella, as they so often have over the years, took control of the game on both sides of halftime in a 35-22 win, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
The Little Dutch trailed by nine in the 2nd quarter, before scoring the game’s next 28 points. Head Coach Jay McKinstrey tells KNIA/KRLS Sports the big swing came before and after the halftime break, as the defense adjusted to the option and Carlisle’s quick offensive line, while the offense had little trouble moving the ball at all in the contest.
“The last five minutes of the first half really helped us, getting that score, and then we come out in the second half and score right away again, and take six minutes off of the clock, and we’re up by two touchdowns.”
Sam Warner had 150 yards on the ground and a score, and Aaron Downs had 127 yards of total offense and two touchdowns. Pella racked up 345 yards rushing, and five different Pella receivers caught passes as well, including Nick DeJong, Logan Shetterly (with a touchdown), Josh Warner, Sam, and Downs.
The 4-0 Dutch are traveling to Knoxville next Friday to begin district play.
