The City of Indianola is receiving a new ice rink at Pickard Park this winter, courtesy of the Iowa Wild.

The ice rink will be built and donated by the Iowa Wild and their hockey rink system, and run by Indianola Parks and Rec. Parks & Recreation Director Doug Bylund tells KNIA News he has received some requests for an ice rink in the past, and it all came together this year

“The Iowa Wild have been donating hockey rinks to communities around the Des Moines metro for years, and we’ve been watching them and learning what works and what doesn’t. We’ve wanted one, and they approached us this year to see if we wanted one and of course we said yes. We’ve had a great relationship with them in the past with hockey nights and we see this as a great partnership.”

The rink won’t be constructed until mid to late November with the boundaries, then water will be distributed by the fire department once temperatures are 28 degrees or colder for a week straight. Bylund also said it takes some time for the ice to fully form, so best case scenario is the rink will be open late December.
