After a long time without any sort of tangible action on disposition of the old Veterans Administration campus in Knoxville, local officials are suddenly getting an infodump from the federal government…and need to process it all in a short period of time.

The General Services Administration controls the property, which has been largely unused for a decade; decisions will have to be made about what to do with the deteriorating buildings on the campus, which party or parties will get the property and how it will be used.

Knoxville City Manager Aaron Adams tells KNIA/KRLS News the challenge now is to decide how to proceed since there’s suddenly more background info for the city to work with.

“It’s funny, it’s very much the definition of a ‘hurry up and wait’ kind of a situation. The waiting portion has played out over many years, and now a lot of information is being brought to us through the federal government in a short period of time,” Adams says. “A lot of decisions are coming to a close now; we’re going to need to start making some big decisions, and so preparation is really a key for that.”

Adams says the city also has to reconcile the various proposals for the VA site into a unified approach.
