For hungry farmers around the area, it was a welcome respite from one of their busiest times of the year; the Knoxville High School Future Farmers of America treated them to lunch, as part of their yearly Feed the Farmers event.

Heavy rains the previous week not only postponed this event, but put farmers behind on their harvest; so many of them are working hard to catch up, and those unable to come to the free luncheon at Smith Fertilizer and Grain on Saturday had meals delivered to them in the field.

Mickayla McGill is the FFA President at the school; she tells KNIA/KRLS News it’s satisfying to be able to help out these farmers, especially since they spend their days helping to feed all of us.

“I really enjoy this event, being able to kind of give back to the community and give back to the farmers that are sustaining our livelihoods and making sure we all have food on our tables,” she says.

Mickayla is herself from a farm family, and knows just how much work is involved in bringing in the harvest this time of year; she says she knows what it means to these farmers to know somebody out there appreciates their work.
