If you have any overdue books at the Knoxville Public Library, instead of paying off your fine with money you can offer canned food instead.

From November 1st through the 11th, the library is accepting canned goods for donation to area food pantries; each can equals $1 off your fine, with a maximum of $50 per library card. The canned food must be in good condition, and not have reached an expiration date.

The library will also accept donations of canned food for the holiday season.

Library Director Roslin Thompson also says the Library Board recently voted not to charge fines for overdue children’s or teen items, in order to encourage their younger patrons to check out and use materials.

Those with lost or missing library items will still be charged for them, although Thompson says the library is willing to work with patrons on paying off their fines.

All items should be brought to the Knoxville Public Library’s temporary home at the former East Elementary School.
