The Central College football team has a major question mark at the sport’s most important position heading into a pivotal conference contest with Coe this Saturday.

Sophomore standout Blaine Hawkins is questionable after suffering an injury in the first quarter of Saturday’s loss to Wartburg. If he can go, Hawkins would likely be less than 100-percent. If he can’t go, both quarterback-turned-wide-receiver Tanner Schmeinke and freshman Brayden Egli saw action Saturday and could be options this weekend.

Coach Jeff McMartin joined us last night on the Central College Radio Coaches Corner, and said that regardless of who’s behind center, the rest of the Dutch need to rally behind him.

“We have no other option but to move ahead. We’re not going to feel sorry for ourselves, we need to be focused on what we have. We still have a lot of very good football players on our team and we still have a talented group that is really hungry for success and knows how to play hard. We’re going to have to stick to some of the things that got us to this point and maximize those skills.”

The Dutch are part of a four-way tie for first place in the American Rivers Conference. Central is 5-1, while Wartburg, Simpson and Dubuque are all 4-1.

Saturday’s game against Coe is the home finale for Central, and after a bye week, the Dutch will wrap up the regular season on November 10th at Loras.
