A certain number of registered voters in Marion County are listed as being “inactive” and may not be aware of that fact; so the County Auditor is reminding voters to check on their status, especially if they’ve moved within the county.

The auditor’s office marks as inactive any voter to whom they have sent registration cards or other election-related mailings, and had them returned and marked as undeliverable.

County Auditor Jake Grandia tells KNIA/KRLS News this is not an effort to purge voters from the rolls; it’s simply a matter of keeping registrations up to date, and is not meant to infringe on anyone’s voting rights.

“The processes and information within the state of Iowa and surrounding states has improved dramatically; but…when somebody is marked as an inactive and it stays on there a long time, it is in essence a process of getting those names removed from the rolls,” Grandia says. “It does not prevent them from re-registering or anything of that nature.”

Grandia says voters can still get back to active status right up to Election Day; he suggests that you check with his office if you’ve changed addresses and haven’t received your registration card or anything else regarding the election.

If you need to re-activate your status, you can re-register or request an absentee ballot through the Auditor’s office. You may also present your registration, your driver’s license or other state ID at the polls on Election Day.
