An Indianola man was arrested early Friday morning after a police standoff closed several streets and forced Irving Elementary to close for the day.

According to court records, Indianola Police performed a welfare check on 47-year-old James Sturman late Thursday evening, where Sturman threatened officers and barricaded himself in his home. Sturman continued to threaten officers throughout the night hours, claiming he had multiple firearms and would blow his house up. At approximately 6:30am, Sturman surrendered peacefully to law enforcement, and faces charges of intimidation with a dangerous weapon, a class D felony. The Indianola Police Department, Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Carlisle Police Department, and Iowa State Patrol all responded to the scene.
