The weather outside may have been less than ideal at times, but there was plenty of warmth inside as the Marion County Historical Society hosted its annual Festival of Trees this weekend.

The array of historic buildings, many dating back well over a century, became a Christmas village complete with dozens of decorated trees. Guests had the opportunity to see the homes and exhibits close up, and vote for their favorite tree by making a donation.

Kathleen Smith from the Historical Society tells KNIA/KRLS News it’s an annual tradition for many of the participating companies, agencies and individuals, and one they look forward to each year.

“We have several organizations and families that have done this for years; it’s just maybe part of their Christmas tradition that they carry on,” Smith says.

There was plenty for visitors to see apart from the trees and decorations; exhibits included demonstrations of rug braiding and spinning, the Valley Chapel hosted singers and the Machine Shed hosted a silent auction.

Proceeds will go towards renovation and expansion of the Machine Shed, to make room for event and exhibit space.
