The annual Chris Street Memorial Basketball Tournament took place in Indianola Saturday, serving as a fundraiser for the Indianola Athletic Boosters.

Principal of Emerson Elementary and organizer Jon Fitzpatrick tells KNIA News over 80 teams both boys and girls played over 120 games, with students providing volunteer hours to help run the tournament. Fitzpatrick also said that other than providing a fundraising income, the tournament serves as a look into history

“We’re kind of dating ourselves here but this tournament is a great reminder for all of our kids about who Chris Street was and what he means to the community still, and it also serves as a way for other kids of other communities to come in and see what he meant to Indianola.”

Christ Street was an Indianola High School graduate who played basketball for the University of Iowa, and was killed in a car accident in 1993.
