Indianola students ranging from pre-kindergarten to high school honored veterans in recognition of Veterans Day over the last several days.

On Friday, assemblies were held at the Indianola Middle School and High School for local veterans with a flag ceremony and patriotic music. American Legion Post 165 Commander James Sullivan tells KNIA News the presentations from the students never get old.

“This time of the year, we honor veterans that are still alive, and it is such a thrill to give them honors. They have served the country well and kept us free for many years. It’s probably the funnest thing we do. I get goosebumps just talking about our flag and watching the students honor it. It has flown over this country and it stands for everything we want it to stand for.”

The Indianola Hy-Vee also provided a free breakfast for all veterans Monday morning, partnering with the Indianola Community Church and Victory Christian Academy. Over 500 meals were served, with students performing a flag folding ceremony, setting the Fallen Soldier’s Table, reading poems, and singing patriotic music.
