PCM football fans rejoice. The program’s elusive first state title can now be checked off the bucket list, as the Mustangs capped off a dominating season with a 28-7 win over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley at the UNI-Dome yesterday in the class 2A final.

The Mustangs wasted no time going to work in this one, as an Olin Meinders interception in the first drive of the game set up a Reed Worth to Preston VanWyk 55-yard bomb to get PCM on the board. After both teams traded punts, Worth went back to the air connecting with Brayton Van Dyke from 12-yards out to make it 13-0 heading into the break. The Nighthawks (11-2) cut the deficit to six out of halftime, but Wes Cummings wasn’t having it and extended the lead back out to 21-7 after a seven yard score. Early in the fourth Worth found Isaac Telfer for an eight-yard touchdown reception that proved to be the nail in the coffin and one that sent the entire towns of Prairie City and Monroe into a frenzy. Once again the Mustang defense did not disappoint, forcing five Nighthawk turnovers on the day. Worth finished 16 of 27 for 262 yards and three touchdowns. Cummings tallied 129 rushing yards and the one score.

Not only do the Mustangs capture their first state championship, but do so in grand fashion, as they are the only team in Iowa regardless of class to win every game by at least three scores. PCM closes the year a perfect 13-0.
