It was like a low-key version of Black Friday; but those lining up for holiday gifts were people in need, for whom this shopping trip was their only option.

Helping Hands in downtown Knoxville had its annual Christmas giveaway on Saturday afternoon; dozens of people lined up outside the store, and were allowed in a few at a time to look for toys, games, decorations and other Christmas time items.

All year long, the volunteers at Helping Hands have been storing away brand-new or gently used items donated by people in the community; these items were brought out for the giveaway, allowing anyone coming through to claim what they wanted.

The store is normally closed on Saturdays, but each year sets aside this time for families and others struggling to find what they need for the season.
