The City of Knoxville will spend part of its time during the budgeting process deciding on how to divide up the hotel-motel tax monies between the various agencies which help to promote the city.

During Monday night’s city council meeting, members heard a proposal from the Chamber of Commerce to increase its share of the revenues received; Hannah Vander Veer says they want to receive up to $30,000, tripling the $10,000 the Chamber was allotted last year.

She says they are building a business plan designed to attract more companies to Knoxville, as well as better engage the members they have.

The council must decide how to divide those monies between the chamber, the Greater Des Moines Partnership and the Knoxville Economic Development Corporation.

They also approved an agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation for reconstruction of Lincoln Street from one end of town to the other; it was noted that the reduction from four lanes to three will save local taxpayers a sizeable amount — from $1.25 million for the wider road, to just $200,000 for the three-lane version.

And City Manager Aaron Adams says they have launched a new website to serve as a source of official information for the VA redevelopment project. The site knoxvillevadistrict.com is intended to separate fact from rumor, since many versions of the latter have been spreading for some time.
