Final action on a proposed communications tower near Bussey should be taken at the next Marion County Board of Supervisors meeting, as they follow the regular procedure for rezoning of property.

A company wishes to install a 300-foot tower at 2146 Highway 5, and wants to rezone the property from agricultural to commercial use. The tower would be used for communications purposes, and AT&T is one of the potential users.

Dislike of the communications giant in particular, and of the concept in general, led some nearby residents to object. But Board of Supervisors Chair Mark Raymie reiterated that there are no legal or other obstacles which would justify denying the rezoning request.

One owner of an adjacent property tells KNIA/KRLS News he’s opposed to the tower because research shows property values decline when a tower is placed nearby. He’s also worried about possible negative health effects, and is concerned because the site has already been prepared for construction before the supervisors have made their decision.

The board is expected to take action following a third and final reading at the December 26th meeting.
