Pella Christian and Grinnell split a basketball doubleheader last night as heard live on the KRLS2 stream at www.kniakrls.com. The Tiger girls stayed unbeaten with a 66-29 romp, while the Eagle boys pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 65-46 win.

In the girls game, Grinnell nailed 14 three-pointers and forced 28 P.C. turnovers to drop the Eagles to 3-5 on the season and 2-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Allison Van Gorp led Pella Christian with 13 points and eight rebounds.

P.C.’s boys trailed 27-26 at halftime, and held a slim 37-35 lead after three quarters despite no points from leading scorer Dan Jungling. The junior guard came alive in the fourth, scoring 10 of the Eagles’ 28 points as they ran away from the Tigers.

Coach Larry Hessing says that the balanced effort was great to see.

“We dressed 10 guys tonight, and we have confidence in all 10 of them. We would like to get Dan some more looks, and that’s something we’re working on because teams are going to try to take him away. When teams look at Quik Stats and see the shooting percentage, they’re going to try to take him out of the game. But we just kept with it, and finally got him some looks down the stretch, and he knocked them down.”

Josh Van Gorp led all Eagle scorers with 17 points, and he also snatched 13 boards. Jayden Huisman joined Jungling with 10 points, all in the second half, as he sat most of the first 16 minutes with foul trouble.

Pella Christian improves to 4-3 on the season and 1-3 in the LHC. The girls will play again tomorrow night against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, while both teams return to conference play on Friday at Dallas Center-Grimes.
