The Pella City Council addressed several projects at a special work session Tuesday evening.

They discussed an update regarding the Oskaloosa Street Corridor, updating compensation for council and the mayor, the latest about the Oost Poort alleyway project scheduled next summer, and what the city can do in regards to accepting ownership of the Pella Memorial Building.

When it comes to the Legion Hall, members of the American Legion indicated they would like the city take ownership under Chapter 37 of Iowa Code, but were also not opposed to an ongoing user agreement that would be renewed on a contractual basis, that also see the city operate the structure.

Council did not vote, but the mayor and members in attendance indicated they plan to acquire the donated building, but lean towards a user agreement instead of Chapter 37 protection, which they were advised may tie the city’s hands on some matters. Both parties agreed to try and preserve time and space for meetings including local veterans groups.

No formal action will be taken on any of the items discussed until upcoming regular meetings.
