At a special work session, the Pella City Council will discuss the potential acquisition of the Pella Memorial Building.

The Marion County Board of Supervisors expressed interest in donating the building to the city, and city administration and the city attorney have been working with the local American Legion post to discuss the transition of the property. According to a staff memo to council, the Pella Memorial Building was originally constructed by the American Legion in 1919. Due to financial issues, they transferred ownership to Marion County in 1923, who established the facility as a Memorial Hall under Chapter 37 of Iowa Code, and members of the legion have operated the facility since. The council is expected to review a use agreement between the city and American Legion, which will highlight the potential uses and improvements moving forward.

The Pella City Council’s special work session is at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Public Safety Complex.
