Local lakes have begun to see ice forming, but it still isn’t thick enough in most places to walk or fish on.

Jim Priebe with Warren County Conservation tells KNIA News ice should be at least four inches thick to be safe enough to fish on, and you should constantly be testing each time you go out.

“It’s important to keep in mind that every piece of water is different, there might be a spring underneath or might have flowing water in the ice. So if you are going out onto the ice, you need to test constantly, and because ice is safe one day doesn’t mean it is safe the next, so test wherever you go.”

Priebe also says an important safety tip is to always let someone know where you will be if you go out onto the ice, so first responders will know where to look in the case of an emergency
