One of the projects the Indianola Streets Department has for the 2019 year is to update the information the city has on road signs.

Street Superintendent Jason Etnyre tells KNIA News the city is working on developing a new Geographical Information System (GIS), and will help the city update the inventory on street signs.

“With the new system, we’ll be able to look at every street sign in the city. How old it is, where it is, what it is, and for some of our older signs we might not know that, and we’ll be able to see if a sign meets the federal retro-reflectivity laws that are in place. Through that, once we have all that information we can look how many stop signs we have, or other signs, and we don’t have that system in place right now.”

Etnyre also says that the city has plans to replace approximately 100 signs this year to help bring the city into compliance, and that his best educated guess would put the city at around 5 to 6 thousand signs in the city.
