An impressive opening for Marion County area athletes in the high school portion of the 2012 Drake Relays on Thursday was met with a fitting end on Saturday as a relay team and an individual each closed out the marquee track and field event with strong performances.

Former Knoxville High School runner Alex Edwards was one of a quartet of freshmen that broke a decades-old Central College record in the Distance Medley Relay at the Drake Relays on Saturday.

Cooler temperatures and higher-ranked competition prevented our local high school athletes from having the same degree of success on Friday at the Drake Relays as they enjoyed on Thursday, but 23 total athletes competing in five different events still came away with a number of things to be proud of.

Central College track and field athlete Ethan Miller was the top Division III competitor in Drake Relays decathlon Thursday, scoring 7,076 points to take fourth overall.
