The summer swimming season started off strong this year at the Pella Aquatic Center, but cool temperatures in July and part of August hurt attendance and sales for the summer overall. Pool manager Jan Bensink tells KNIA/KRLS news that attendance in July was down by 6,200 guests from last year, which led to an approximately $20,000 decrease in revenue for the month from the previous year. Overall, attendance was down by nearly 6,900 people over the outdoor pool season. The news wasn’t all bad, though: A new program that allowed people to walk and swim against the current of the Adventure River of the Pella Aquatic Center was wildly popular, particularly among triathletes in training. Bensink says several participants are already looking forward to continuing the program next season.
