goff mine

The Goff Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation received national recognition recently when it was awarded the 2014 Office of Surface Mining’s Mid Continent Region’s award at the National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs conference in Columbus, Ohio.

The area was strip mined in the 1960’s and had been a blemish in the area until was reclaimed from 2010 through 2013. A 180-acre abandoned strip mine located five miles southeast of Knoxville was reclaimed as a result of the project.

The Goff project was one of the largest, most complex reclamation projects in Iowa and involved the largest number of partners.
