Banowetz slam lifts Central in softball sweep

Posted: Thursday, March 8th, 2018 at 5:49 am

Freshman Katie Banowetz highlighted a seven-run inning with her first collegiate homer, a pinch-hit grand slam, and the Central College softball team regained its footing with a pair of wins in the Tucson Invitational Games Wednesday.

The No. 21-rated Dutch exploded past Hiram College (Ohio) 12-6, then subdued Wittenberg University (Ohio) 4-2 to move back above .500 at 6-4. The wins were a needed boost after letting Tuesday’s nightcap slip away in a 5-4 eight-inning loss to the College of Saint Benedict (Minn.)

Central gets a needed day off and returns to action Friday, meeting Chapman University (Calif.) at 10 a.m. (Central Time) and Northland College (Wis.) at 2:30 p.m.

Central Drops a Pair at Season Opening NFCA Leadoff Classic

Posted: Saturday, March 3rd, 2018 at 5:50 am

What started well, ended in day one disappointment as the 21st-ranked Central College softball team lost to number six Trine 11-3 and number eleven Christopher Newport 5-2 yesterday in season opening action Friday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Tucson, Arizona.

Against the Thunder, a national tournament qualifier from a season ago, the Dutch jumped out to a 3-0 third inning lead on a Lauren Bagby RBI triple and an Emily Walton two-run homer. But Central went hitless the rest of the way as Trine exploded for 11 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and won the game via the run rule.

In game two, Central again struck first, with Pella’s Sara Tallman scoring on a Walton RBI single. Christopher Newport slugged out four runs in the second to take control, and held on for the win despite several Central threats.

The Dutch are 0-2, and get right back into action today with games against DePauw and Babson. Action starts today at 3:00 Arizona time, 4:00 in Iowa, and you can hear both contests on our KNIA2 stream at www.kniakrls.com with Trevor Castle on the play-by-play.
