Pair of 19-0 Runs Spark Central Basketball Triumphs

Posted: Saturday, November 19th, 2016 at 5:50 am

It looked dicey in the first half, but the Central women’s basketball team bucketed 30 points in the third quarter and scored 19 unanswered points to rally past Bethany Lutheran last night, 83 – 63, inside of P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. The Dutch women missed some good looks early, and found themselves down 13 at one point in the second quarter, despite forcing 16 turnovers in the first half. Coach Chelsea Petersen says their ability to bounce back and respond to a challenge this early in the year shows the improvement the team has already made since last season.
Central found their touch coming out of the locker room, shooting a sizzling 62% from the field in the latter 20 minutes of the game and getting contributions from up-and-down their line-up. Sophomore Claire Marburger followed up Tuesday’s 32-point performance against Grinnell with a 30-burger on 14-of-24 shooting, and grabbed nine rebounds. Emily Dine added 18 and Jackie Kriegel scored 12 in the win to push the women’s record to 2 – 0 early in the 2016-17 campaign.
The Dutch men also used a 19 – 0 run to help them get by North Central University yesterday, 84 – 75, in their first game of the Northwestern Tip-Off Tournament. Though the offense did turn it over 19 times, Central shot over 47% from the field for the game, including ten made three-pointers. Four starters finished in double-figures in the scoring column for Central, led by Colby Taylor’s 27 points and Kyle Smith’s 15. The men are also 2 – 0 to begin the year; they’ll play later today in St. Paul, Minnesota against Northwestern, and the women will play Sunday in Springfield, Illinois versus Robert Morris.

Both Central College Basketball Teams got wins last night to open up their seasons. The Lady Dutch are now 1-0 and will suit up this Friday against Bethany Lutheran in the Tulip City.

The men were in much more of a dogfight against Iowa Wesleyan, but the Iowa Conference favorites hit shots down the stretch to seal it in a 98-92 victory. The Central Men are also now 1-0 and play this Friday against North Central in Minneapolis.
