It was a day of fun and inspiring finishes for our local Class 1A track and field teams inside Drake Stadium in Des Moines on Thursday. The Twin Cedars’ girls’ track team competed in their one and only event, the shuttle hurdle relay to begin the day. They came in fourth in their heat with a time of just over 1:15, which did not qualify them for the finals on Saturday. Corey Harrell for the Sabers’ boys could not get a shot put throw to stick, as all three of his tosses were scratched. Melcher-Dallas’ Cody Alexander was fourth in his heat of the 400 meter dash, with a time of 52.47, but unfortunately, was not fast enough to get him to the finals. For Pleasantville, sophomore Kirk Wicks had a long jump of 18’4”, and in one of the more inspiring stories of the day, the Trojans’ Chris Peden, a senior, was coming around the first turn in the 200 meter dash, and came up lame with a hamstring injury. Peden refused medical treatment and ended up finishing the race to a raucous standing ovation from the near capacity crowd. Pleasantville’s boys’ shuttle hurdle relay team was third in their heat with a time of just under 1:04. The Class 1A action continues tomorrow, and for a full list of results from yesterday and events coming up today, check out KNIAKRLS.com underneath Today’s Sports on the front page.
