Picked to finish in fifth place by American Rivers Conference coaches before the season started, the Central College men’s soccer team shocked the league by winning its first ever regular season championship last fall.  For their accomplishments, Coach Garry Laidlaw and his staff were recognized as the Coaching Staff of the Year at April’s Dutchies.

Laidlaw is assisted by Will Foskett, Greg Walter and Zach Jensen, and says that the camaraderie that exists between the four coaches translates to his team on the field.

“We come to the pitch every day, looking forward to sharing in and enjoying each other’s company.  I think the team and the players really feed off that and enjoy that.  We never want to lose sight of the fact that it should be fun and enjoyable to come and play the game that you’re passionate about.  But they also understand that there’s a time to get your work done and concentrate and put it all into practice.  I think it all came together with a great group of guys.”

Laidlaw and his staff led the Dutch to a 14-4-2 record last fall.  The other nominees for Coaching Staff of the Year were the fellow American Rivers Conference championship football and softball teams, as well as the women’s basketball squad that made the league tournament for the first time in 16 years.
