A Melcher-Dallas High School science teacher and coach currently facing sexual abuse charges has resigned. Superintendent Steve Mitchell tells KNIA/KRLS news, David Bennett submitted his resignation at a special school board meeting Monday which was approved by a 4-1 vote without any verbal debate.

Prior to the resignation, Bennett was on paid leave after allegedly having inappropriate sexual contact with a female juvenile student.

Mitchell says a part time teacher who was filling in after the passing of Jerry Oliver this fall has moved into the position for the remainder of the semester. He says due to declining enrollment the district plans to downsize and not hire back someone for the position in the fall.

Despite the change in personnel, Mitchell says the education of students in the district has not suffered. Bennett’s trial for the second degree sexual assault charge is scheduled to begin August 16th.
