Food is always a highlight of the holiday season – so much so that it can be easy to forget healthy eating habits you abide by typically. Knoxville Hy-Vee Dietitian Courtney Slater has some simple tips to make sure you don’t go off-track this holiday season. She says the best measure is fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables. The turkey may garner the Thanksgiving spotlight, but she notes that most families also will have plenty of portions of things like cranberries, applesauce, potatoes, and green beans.

She also suggests that you watch your portion size, as our eyes can be bigger than our stomachs, and be careful of the hidden calories alcohol offers as well. Lastly, Slater recommends skipping the nap right after dinner and instead maybe going outside to play or take a walk. That’ll keep you active and help your body burn some calories right away.
