The Pella Christian Eagles’ volleyball team fought hard last night, but couldn’t close the door on the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Rockets. After winning the first two sets, the Eagles dropped their next three with final scores of 25 – 19, 25 – 23, 12 – 25, 23 – 25, 12 – 15. Following their first game win, the Eagles were in an early 9 – 4 hole. Following a time out, the Eagles went on an 11 – 2 run and eventually secured the second set to put themselves in a great position to upset the Rockets. Eddyville-Blakesburg came back to win the third set in dominant fashion, and after both teams had no bigger than a one-point lead until late in the fourth game, the Rockets surged ahead to take that set, and eventually the match. It was a tearful goodbye for the Eagles’ seniors, and Eagles’ head volleyball coach, Cindy Nikkel, said that she was very proud of how hard he girls fought not only this game, but all season, and it was a fitting, though not ideal, end to the season. The Eagles’ final record for the 2012 volleyball campaign is 16 – 18.
