2014 Marion County Special Olympics Bowling Athletes

It was a busy fall for Marion County Special Olympic Athletes.

In September, Marissa Schletzbaum participated in “Over the Edge”, where she raised $1,000 dollars for Special Olympics of Iowa by rappelling off the Financial Center building in Des Moines.

Fourteen Marion County Special Olympians competed in the Regional Bowling event in October and nine participated in the State Special Olympic Bowling Tournament in November.

Marion County Special Olympic Athletes have more events coming up with Basketball Skills and 3-on-3 Basketball coming up this winter, followed by track and field events in April.

Regional Bowling event on October 16 at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines.The athletes and the awards they received were:

Alex Alder, Pleasantville 5th place, Charlie Leavitt, Knoxville 4th place, Stacia Mason, Knoxville 1st place, Avery Moore, Knoxville 3rd place, Joe Morgan, Pleasantville 1st place, Abby Funk, Knoxville 3rd place, Tegan Ripperger, Pleasantville 1st place, Jacob Hindman, Knoxville 1st place, Tanji O’Connor, Indianola 2nd place, Chase Robbins, Pleasantville 1st place, and the team of Ben Heywood,Pleasantville, Marissa Schletzbaum, Pleasantville, Haley Stevens, Monroe, and Michelle Turnage, Pleasantville 1st place. The athletes with 1st place advance to the State Tournament in Des Moines.

The State Special Olympic Bowling Tournament was held on November 22 at Bowlerama in Des Moines. The athletes received the following medals:

Jacob Hindman, Knoxville, gold medal, Stacia Mason, Knoxville, gold medal, Joe Morgan, Pleasantville, silver medal, Tegan Ripperger, Pleasantville, gold medal, Chase Robbins, Pleasantville, silver medal, the bowling team of Ben Heywood, Pleasantville, Marissa Schletzbaum, Pleasantville, Haley Stevens, Monroe, and Michelle Turnage, Pleasantville received silver medals.
