The first week of fall can signify variable weather in Iowa.

Meteorologist Brad Small with the National Weather Service says the first frost of the season is fast approaching.

“The conditions would we be looking for would be that the vegetation, the plants, and the grass fall below the dew point, and their both below freezing,” Small says. “So we are looking for dew points below freezing and a surface temperature below freezing.”

Small adds that the air temperature can be in the mid-30s for frost to form.

He says hard freezes typically happen when temperatures drop to near freezing for extended periods of time.

He says the typical first frost in Marion County takes place in the first week of October.
