An Illinois historian has written a book highlighting the importance of Iowa, Illinois and other midwestern states in the American Civil War.
John Huelscamp, author of “Friends of the Wigwam – A Civil Story” says Governor William Milo Stone of Knoxville played a significant role in the election of Abraham Lincoln and winning the war as a Colonel with the 22nd Iowa. Stone fought and was wounded at Shiloh and the Siege of Vicksburg, the success of which helped turn the tide of war against the South by splitting it in half at the Mississippi River. Stone was Governor from 1864-1868. Huelscamp took 20 years to gather the research for his book.
