Indianola Girls and Boys Basketball Sweep Newton with Big Individual Performances

The Indianola girls and boys basketball teams swept Newton in Little Hawkeye Conference play Tuesday behind a pair of 30-point performances from Kendall Clatt and Drew Kingery, with the girls winning 73-52 and the boys 65-37 in a doubleheader heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

The #14 in class 5A Indians girls traded blows with the Cardinals early, holding a lead for much of the first half but not pulling away despite four first half three-point shots from Clatt, leading 19-11 after one and 30-18 at the halftime break. The Indians maintained their double-digit lead through much of the third quarter, but wouldn’t be able to put the game away until Clatt hit another four triples in the fourth quarter to give her 10 for the game, tying a school record set in 1992. Clatt scored 30 points in the contest, going 10-13 from deep.

The Indians boys also maintained a lead against the Cardinals for most of the contest, but also had trouble pulling away against an aggressive Newton defense tha forced 13 first half Indianola turnovers. The Indians led 14-9 after the first, and 30-22 at the halftime break, but the offense struggled outside of Drew Kingery. Kingery scored 16 in the first half, then followed that up with a 10 point third quarter as the Indians built their lead up to 53-34 after the third. Kingery ended the night with a career high 32 points, and head coach Brett Watson tells KNIA Sports the sophomore has shown he can do much more than just score the ball.

“He was an absolute beast today. They threw a lot of different defenders at him but he was able to get to the rim quite a bit. Not only that, but to make the right read too. That’s the other part of it, the guy can get to the rim a lot but he’s making the right read such as finishing at the rim or a kick out three. He had a monster game for us.”

The Indians girls are now 10-1 on the season and on a 10-game winning streak, while the boys improve to 7-3 and on a 5-game winning streak, with both teams hosting Warren County rival Norwalk on Friday.
