According to Judi Van Hulzen, RN with Marion County Public Health, influenza activity in Iowa is increasing but remains sporadic. But, she says, it’s not too late to get a flu vaccination. Flu season usually peaks in January, and it takes two weeks from when you get your flu shot to have any protection. So far this season in Iowa 69 cases of influenza has been confirmed, with 2009 H1N1 virus being the dominant virus. Van Hulzen adds that the proportion of outpatient visits for flu like symptoms remain well below the regional baseline in Iowa so far.
